ARE YOU IN A BATTLE..?By Soji Samson, Doha

Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and of a good courage, be not afraid neither be thou dismayed for thy God is with thee wherever you go” This is a promise given by God to Joshua for His children in their crisis. But, when we are in any crisis, fear grips us and we doubt this promise. Fear and doubt comes from the enemy as 2 Timothy 1 says “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of the spirit of love and sound mind”.  When the enemy brings fear and doubt in our adverse situation, we should not keep quiet. Instead we should mind our position and be alert to win the battle, as given in the passage 2 Chronicles 20:2 Chronicles 20 explains how Jehoshaphat defeated Moab and Ammon.

2 Chronicles 20:2 “Some men came and told Jehoshaphat that a vast army is coming against you from beyond the sea”.  As with anyone, when Jehoshaphat heard this, he feared and set himself to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast for all Judah. When we have a confrontation with the enemy, we as children of God should take few steps in such situations:

  1. Seeking the Lord and pronouncing a fast (2 Chronicles 20:3).  Jehoshaphat was not perplexed when the army was coming against him. He knew exactly what he needed to do. He looked at the Holy one of Israel.  The scripture says woe unto them who seeks help from worldly men. Isaiah 31:1 “Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy one of Israel”.  If you want to sustain in your crisis, you should get a word from the Lord like Jehoshaphat sitting at His feet, fasting and praying.
  2. Praising the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:6). Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of God and started praising God “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you”. Jehoshaphat not only presented his troubles, but also he started praising His holy name.
  3. Depending on HIM totally (2 Chronicles 20:12). Jehoshaphat confessed that they have no might against the army that came against them. He proclaimed that they did not know what to do and their eyes were fixed on God.  They depended on God totally like you rest on a rocking chair when you are tired.  This is what we should do in our crisis.  John 15:5 says for without me you can do nothing.  Every morning, enemy must be saying nothing is going to work out, but lean on Him completely. You will see the miracle.
  4. Be Still in the presence of the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:13).  All the men of Judah with their wives and children stood before the Lord. When they waited upon the Lord, spirit of the Lord came upon them and prophesied.  Isaiah 40:31 says they that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength. They received the promise “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army.  For the battle is not yours, but God’s”.  The Lord instructed them to go out to face them the next day and gave them the confirmation that the Lord would be with them. They did not win the battle, but they got confirmation from the Lord.
  5. Have faith in the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:20). As they set out for journey, Jehoshaphat strengthened them saying to have faith in the Lord your God and have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.  We should have faith in the promise what God has given despite the situation. Never doubt His word.
  6. Singing and Praising the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:21). Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and praise Him for the splendor of His holiness. Jehoshaphat and group started worshipping the Lord as if they won the battle.  Once we get the word from the Lord for our crisis, we need to praise Him for the victory.  As they started singing and praising the Lord, the Lord set ambushes against their enemies and they were defeated. 2 Corinthians 10:4 says for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. In our distress, instead of sitting and mourning, we should praise the Lord continuously until you see the victory. Our ground should be holy when we praise God. Otherwise, no matter how much we praise God, we will not reach our promise.  Many times, our promises are on hold because enemy has lot to claim in our life if we have anything of his property in our life.  He is an accuser of brethren. God is a just God and he cannot fulfill the promises if our ground is not holy.

When men of Judah came to the place and looked toward the vast army, they saw dead bodies lying on the ground and none had escaped.  On the fourth day, they assembled in the valley of Beracah and praised the Lord.  All the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned to Jerusalem happily for the Lord had given them victory over their enemies. They went to the temple of God praising Him with harps and lutes and trumpets.  The fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the countries when they came to know how Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.

We can see in the battle of Jehoshaphat, the enemies fought and destroyed each other. Look at the weapons Jehoshaphat used in the battle. Instead of being in fear and doubt, let us do like Jehoshaphat seeking the Lord first, fasting and praying, praising the Lord, claiming the promise what God has given for your crisis, admitting that you are helpless in this situation, having faith in the Lord and stand still and praise the Lord. Don’t move from your stand, how much ever the enemy messes up the situation.  Once you get the victory, your enemies would know it was the hand of the Lord who gave victory in your crisis that leaves fear of God in their hearts. “The battle belongs to the Lord”.
