DO YOU KNOW…? By Sunny Varghese Thalavady

The issue with most of the younger generation or shall we say modern science & E-Tech era is that, they compare everything with what they learnt in schools, colleges and universities. They try to reason it out with what they know.

The world history is split in to two parts, one part is known as B.C. (Before Christ), and, the other part is AD (Anno Domini- In the year of the Lord). We are in AD 2014, all our books, history, calculations are all based on these facts, but still we don't believe in Jesus. While saying AD-2014, we are ignoring the fact that, we are declaring we are in "In the year of the Lord". Whatever stated in Bible has been proven beyond doubt. Still they find it difficult to accept.

We learnt in our school days about leap year. We know, it comes every fourth year in our calendar and, has one day extra. So instead of 365 days a year, Leap Year has 366 days. The so called science has established that, this is because; the earth stopped orbiting around Sun for one full day. This one day extra we got in our calendar, needs to be regularized in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year.

When I was sharing this with one of my friend, he asked, why every four years, why not every year. The answer is the earth stopped orbiting Sun only for 24 hours. The average number of days per year is 365 + 1/4 − 1/100 + 1/400 = 365.2425 days. We therefore, can't divide one day by four. Instead what scholars did is to add one day every four years.

Now let us see what Bible has to say, why the earth stopped orbiting Sun for one full day. Joshua 10: 1-2 Now it came about when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai, and had utterly destroyed it (just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king), and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were within their land, that he feared greatly, because Gibeon {was} a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men {were} mighty. When Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai, he decided to confront Joshua with all his power. So he called on his friendly neighborhood kings (five of them), and decided to face Joshua. They fought fiercely and in order to defeat the five kings and their army, Joshua needed one more day. He doesn't want to let the sun set, because during the night, enemies could re-group themselves. So he decided to fight them till the finish. For this purpose, he told the Sun to stand still at Gibeon (where they were fighting), the moon in the valley of Aijalon.

Bible says that: Joshua 10:12-13 Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "O sun, stand still at Gibeon, And O moon in the valley of Aijalon. So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies. Is it not written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hasten to go {down} for about a whole day. Joshua 10:14 There was no day like that before it or after it, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel. That's how the one extra day evolved and later called as leap year. NOW YOU KNOW how leap year came in to existence, and, the role of Bible in our daily life. Amen
